Community involvement

HDRPCA members invest our local community in a variety of ways. As a car club we feel that our community support should reflect who we are. With that in mind, our members have chosen to financially support the COCC Automotive Scholarship Fund and to provide local area student scholarships to the Deschutes County Skid Car Training Program to instruct new drivers. We supply stuffed animals for patrolmen to give to children traumatized at the scene of an accident. We pick up litter in the Adopt-A-Road program and take part in local parades and car shows.

Here are some details about the programs we enjoy supporting:

Deschutes County Skid Car Training Program

In the past we have annually sponsored 20 - 25 local high school Seniors to the Deschutes County Skidcar Training program, helping to put safer drivers on the Central Oregon roads we all share.

The Deschutes County Skid Car Training Program is an all-weather driver enhancement program, taught with the aid of the Skid Car Training Platform: a wheeled frame and hydraulic dolly system that attaches to the frame of a regular passenger car with the ability to reduce or increase the amount of traction the vehicle has.

The Deschutes County Skid Car Training Program is a four hour class—with one hour in the classroom and three hours driving in the car. During the training, techniques discussed and practiced include proper eye placement, proper acceleration, proper braking, proper steering techniques, weight and energy management, and proper tire decisions and maintenance. Students learn to properly use antilock braking systems, and understand the differences between rear wheel drive/front wheel drive/four wheel drive systems. They learn about Electronic Stability Control and Electronic Traction Control in modern vehicles. They will practice skid/slide prevention, control, and recovery.

Central Oregon Community College Foundation, Automotive Scholarship

Since 2010 we have been contributing to the Central Oregon Community College Foundation, Automotive Scholarship Fund. These funds help members of our Central Oregon community learn a useful skill, automotive repair, and become productive members of the Central Oregon community.

Since 1955, Central Oregon Community College Foundation scholarships have enabled students to learn new skills, earn technical certificates, complete two-year associate degrees and be prepared to pursue the remainder of their undergraduate studies at a college or university.

We are proud, and exceedingly grateful, to be able to support Central Oregon Community College Foundation scholarships that have impacted the lives of Central Oregon students. These students come from all corners of the College district and share one belief that education can change and improve their lives.

Oregon Adopt-A-Road Program

The High Desert Region actively participates in the Oregon Adopt-A-Highway program, helping to keep Central Oregon’s highways beautiful. Our designated highway is a section of Hwy 20 that lies between Bend and Sisters.
